Taco Troubles: An unappetizing app

Quarantine has caused many of us to rely on apps and websites more than ever. That wasn’t a big change for me. I was an early proponent of ordering online, heading to Amazon or eBay for necessities or gifts in the mid- to late-1990s, not long after the internet itself went mainstream.

But ordering food had remained a personal, face-to-face experience. You go through a line and tell the person what you want. Or you sit down at a table, study the menu and give your order to the waiter or waitress. Sit back and wait — hopefully not too long — for your meal.

My wife and I love eating out, but that wasn’t something you could even consider until the past week or so in the Age of COVID-19. There were only to-go orders, which meant you had to click boxes or call in orders with your phone. It just wasn’t the same.

Fortunately, many restaurants dedicated resources to fine-tune their apps to streamline the process and make ordering as stress-free as possible. I’ve had no problems with several of them, including Chick-fil-A and Chipotle.

Unfortunately, Barberitos has struggled.

The app worked great the first time I used it, but it hasn’t worked the past several times I’ve tried to order with it. I think I’ve taken the correct steps, but every time I try to make my order I’m hit with the same “Invalid Options Selected” screen.

Just to make sure it wasn’t me, we tried it on my wife’s phone. It didn’t work.

We then tried it on my son’s phone. It didn’t work.

I deleted the app and downloaded it again. It didn’t work.

I’ve let the employees know on both the phone and when I’ve picked up orders I’ve called in, but to no avail. Their response: “Sometimes it works.” Or: “Yeah, we’ve had trouble with it.”

It still doesn’t work for me, but my wife was able to complete our order through the app to help make our Cinco de Mayo complete.

But you know what? That’s a lot of work for a taco.
